5 Furnace Troubleshooting Tips to Get Your Heating System Back Up and Running

5 Furnace Troubleshooting Tips to Get Your Heating System Back Up and Running

February 01 2022

When your furnace isn’t working properly, it can be a huge inconvenience. Not only is it uncomfortable to be without heat in the middle of winter, but it can also be expensive to have to call a professional to come and fix the problem. If you’re having furnace troubles, try these 5 troubleshooting tips to get your heating system back up and running.

1. Check the thermostat to make sure it’s set to “heat” and turned up high enough.

If the furnace isn’t turning on, the first thing you should check is the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to “heat” and that the temperature is turned up high enough so that the furnace will turn on.

If you’re not sure how to do this, consult your furnace’s owner’s manual or call a furnace technician for help.

If the furnace still isn’t turning on, there may be a problem with the thermostat itself, in which case you’ll need to call a professional to repair it.

2. Change the air filter if it looks dirty or clogged.

One of the most common reasons for a furnace to stop working is a dirty or clogged air filter. If the furnace can’t get enough air, it will overheat and shut down.

To check the air filter, remove it from the furnace and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see through it, it’s probably time to replace it.

If the air filter is dirty or clogged, change it and see if that fixes the problem. If the furnace still isn’t working, there may be a more serious problem that needs to be addressed by a professional.

3. Inspect the furnace ducts for any leaks or obstructions.

Another common problem with furnaces is leaks or obstructions in the furnace ducts. If the furnace can’t get enough air, it will overheat and shut down.

To check for leaks or obstructions, inspect the furnace ducts for any holes, tears, or other damage. If you find any damage, have it repaired by a furnace technician.

4. Make sure the furnace pilot light is on and burning brightly.

Another common problem with furnaces is a pilot light that isn’t burning brightly. If the furnace can’t get enough air, it will overheat and shut down.

To check the pilot light, remove the furnace cover and look for the pilot light. If it’s off or doesn’t seem to be burning brightly, turn it on and see if that fixes the problem.

5. Call a professional if you’ve tried all of these troubleshooting tips and your furnace still isn’t working properly.

If you’ve tried all of these troubleshooting tips and your furnace still isn’t working, it’s time to call a professional. There may be a more serious problem that needs to be addressed by a furnace technician.

What to Do When Your Home Heating System Fails

It’s that time of the year again. Home heating systems are failing, and not just in your house, but all over town. As a homeowner, you have some measures you can take to fix this problem before it gets too cold outside! In this blog post, we will talk about what to do when your home heating system fails and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again in the future.

Check the thermostat to make sure it’s set at a comfortable temperature

One of the first things you should do when your home heating system fails is to check the thermostat to make sure it’s set at a comfortable temperature. If it’s not, adjust it until it is. This will help keep you warm while you’re trying to fix the problem.

Check your furnace filter for dirt and debris – if you find any, replace it with a new one

After the thermostat has been checked, now is time to check your furnace filter. Your filter may be dirty or blocked because of dirt and debris. If you do notice any filth on the old filter, take out the old one and put in a brand-new replacement as soon as possible. Turn off the power to your home heating system and then turn it on again

Turn off the power to your home heating system and then turn it on again

Another thing you should do when trying to fix a broken heating system is to turn it off completely by turning the main switch in your breaker box to “off”. After that, wait about thirty seconds before turning it back on. If this doesn’t work out for you, then you can try turning it off and on again a few times. If none of these fixes work, call in professional help or contact an HVAC company immediately

Call in professional help or contact an HVAC company immediately

At this point, if you’ve tried all of the methods mentioned and your heating system is still not fixed, it’s time to call in some reinforcements. This could mean calling a professional heating contractor, or an HVAC company. Either way, it’s important that you get this fixed as soon as possible because the longer your heating system isn’t working properly, the colder and more uncomfortable it will be inside of your home. Stay safe by placing space heaters around your house throughout the day so that you can stay warm during this cold winter season!

Safely place space heaters around your house

Space heaters are a great way to keep your home warm when your heating system isn’t working properly. You can buy them at most stores, or even rent them if you don’t want to purchase one. Just remember to place them in safe areas and never leave them unattended. And finally, the most important thing you can do this winter is to make sure to have emergency numbers readily available in case of an emergency situation. They might save your life!

Remember to have emergency numbers readily available in case of an emergency situation – they might save your life!

It’s always a good idea to keep the phone number for your heating contractor or HVAC company on hand just in case something happens and they need to be contacted immediately. You should also think about keeping the number for your local fire department, as well as the poison control center. These numbers should be kept in a safe place where you will remember to find them if needed.

10 Tips To Keep Your Heating Bill Down This Winter

JD's Tips

10 Tips To Keep Your Heating Bill Down This Winter

November 14, 2021
JD's Tips

At JD’s AC, we know the struggle of electricity usage for our East Texas residents, and we want to help you keep your costs low. Keeping your home warm during the frigid winter months shouldn’t leave your wallet scarce. With Winter approaching, many East Texans are just now thinking about starting up their furnaces and central heating systems. And while we all enjoy a toasty home, we don’t always enjoy the inflation in our electric bills. Especially as holidays approach. JD’s wants to help by providing you with some of our tried and true methods to keep your heating bills down this winter season.

  • Seal air leaks

Did you know that air leaks are responsible for an average of 25%-40% of your energy bill usage? That’s a good portion of your cash literally flying out the window every month! Checking your weather stripping and replacing worn stripping around your windows, doors, and light fixtures could save you tons of money!

If you aren’t sure how to replace your weatherstripping or are overwhelmed with where to start, just hop on Youtube! There are plenty of DIY home projects that can help guide you through this simple, fun, and money-saving trick!

  • Leave your curtains open

Natural sunlight is wonderful for keeping your room warm. During the summer months, while we often recommend keeping them closed for the opposite reason, it’s highly encouraged to leave them open during the winter! Once the sun goes down, close them back up to keep the cold night air at bay.

  • Dress for the season and grab your blankets

Grab your favorite pair of sweatpants, your hoodie, and tube socks, it’s wintertime! One of the best ways to stay warm inside without cranking your central heating system to 90 is to compensate with warmer attire and comfy blankets. Changing out the fabric of sheets you are using from cotton to flannel is another simple and easy way to keep you warm at night.

  • Check your air filter

We know, you feel like we say this all the time, and we do! Checking your air filter can play a vital role in keeping your HVAC system running smoothly. When your filter is overfull, dirty air is unable to easily pass through it, causing your unit to work twice as hard to push through your warm air. This extra pressure from output will cause your energy bill to rise and your central heating system struggles to work harder to get the warm air where it needs to go.  A simple check once a month will let you know when and how often you need to replace your filter.

Pro tip! Date your filters when you change them. Also, pleated air filters are more likely to filter and catch small particles that can easily clog your system.

  • Keep all doors closed

If you aren’t using a room, close the door. Closing the door to rooms you are not residing in will help keep the rest of your home nice and toasty. By letting warm air out of a room, your central heating system signals to produce more air to compensate for what is being lost. Closing the doors gives your system a chance to rest, thus keeping your bills lower in the long run.

  • Inspect your insulation

Inside your attic is the insulation that helps keep cold air from the outside from coming inside. Insulation plays a big role in keeping your home comfortable all year long, however in the winter it helps by keeping cold air out, and the warm air from your furnace in. But for many East Texas residents, are unaware that insulation does have a lifespan. If you have recently moved into a new home, or can’t remember the last time you had new insulation installed, give us a call! We can send a certified HVAC professional up to take a look and provide you with the best recommendations for your home.

  • Turn down your thermostat

A simple way to decrease energy consumption is to lower your thermostat. While it may sound a little counterintuitive, hear us out. According to energy.gov, the most energy-efficient thermostat setting is 68 degrees. While that may sound chilly, especially during the colder months your furnace will be blowing air at a 68-degree level, not your AC system.

Your furnace is only able to heat a specific amount of air at a time, depending on the size of your home and the size of your unit.

  • If you have a fireplace, use it!

It’s winter, and there is something special about a nice fire on a cold winter day. If your home is equipped with a fireplace, not only are you lucky, but you could save even more money!

Pro tip! While you’re not running your fireplace, keep your damper inside your chimney closed. As warm air can easily escape and get lost. While you are running your fireplace, keeping your damper open is essential to prevent smoke from filling up your home.

  • Use your oven

Sounds old school right? But it works! One of our personal favorite ways to generate heat in the winter is to cook up something delicious! Cooking with your stove can act as an alternative or extra heat source.

Pro tip! Like grandma used to, leave that oven door open! As long as you don’t have small children running around, leaving your oven door open while it is on is a great way to extend heat to other parts of the house when needed.

  • Schedule a furnace tune-up appointment

One of the best ways that you can prepare yourself for the winter months (as well as your central heating system) is to schedule a furnace tune-up! During a tune-up, our certified HVAC technician will inspect every part of your furnace to ensure that it is in tip-top condition and working order. During this inspection, our technician will test all parts of your furnace and let you know if there’s anything that will need to be repaired, or replaced.

Not only are tune-ups good for your furnace, but they are also good all year round to ensure the longevity of your HVAC system as a whole unit.

To learn more about how to keep your heating bills down this winter, or to schedule a tune-up, give us a call or book an appointment online with us! We look forward to serving you. JD’s AC is proud to serve those within our East Texas community with quality HVAC service.

Whole-Home Humidifiers: Are they right for you?

Whole-Home Humidifiers: Are they right for you?

October 1, 2021

The problem of dry air.

When the furnace is running and the windows are shut, you’re losing out on that precious natural moisture that would normally keep your home feeling warm and comfortable all year round. That’s why it’s important to keep moisture levels up by using a whole-house humidifier!

Why choose a whole-house humidifier?

  1. Humidifiers help to increase the moisture in the air.
  2. Humidifiers reduce airborne bacteria and viruses.
  3. They also help remove noxious airborne chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene, which can cause breathing problems and other health issues.
  4. Most importantly, whole-house humidifiers provide humidity at a level that suits your home needs. The amount of humidity you require depends on several factors: the specific type of furnace and air conditioning system in your home, ambient temperature, and even where you live geographically.

Please note – your home may not require a whole-house humidifier. Consult an HVAC expert before making a final decision.

What is a whole house humidifier?

A whole-house humidifier is installed in the duct system of your entire house, replacing the furnace and air conditioning systems. In this way, all rooms of your home are receiving the same amount of moisture throughout the day. With a whole-house humidifier, your home’s heating and cooling system is responsible for both heating and cooling your house.

If you feel that your home could benefit from installing an in-home humidifier, give our team here at JD’s AC a call! One of our friendly, and knowledgeable service technicians would be happy to help you make your home comfortable, all year long!

What Is The Best Air Filter For Allergies?

What Is The Best Air Filter For Allergies?

September 2, 2021

If you’re suffering from allergies, you may be considering changing the air filter in your East Texas home. You might also be wondering which type is best for your needs. While every allergy sufferer’s symptoms are different, there are a few general guidelines that can help you choose the right air filter:

  • Micro-fiber filters can eliminate bacteria and other microorganisms from the air, making them excellent choices if you suffer from respiratory problems like asthma or allergies.
  • HEPA filters have been shown to reduce airborne particles in your East Texas home significantly more than other types of filter media due they have a tighter construction and typically do not respond well to gasses or vapors as they may clog up the vacuum cleaner’s filtration mechanism.
  • Electrostatic filters use a high voltage charge to attract particles, which then adhere to the surfaces of the filter. This is an excellent choice if you have pets or smoke in your East Texas home.

If you want a more affordable or easier solution, an air ionizer can help reduce airborne particles by creating positive and negative ions in the air that attract dust and pollen. Ionizers help improve indoor air quality without having to install a new filter. Whether you choose to install an electronic or microfiber filter on your furnace, replacing the filter regularly is important for enjoying cleaner air throughout your East Texas home. The right air filter can keep your air clean, healthy, and pleasant.

Benefits of changing your air filters:

  • Reduces dust particles in the air, which can trigger allergies.
  • Cleans indoor air better than standard filters by removing mold, bacteria, and other harmful forms of pollution from the air.
  • Decreases pollen and microscopic airborne particles that cause allergy symptoms while improving indoor air quality.
  • Increases airflow, making heating and cooling systems more energy efficient while improving your comfort.
  • Saves money because replacing filters regularly prevents excessive wear on your heating/cooling system.

Are you in need of your filter changed? Give us a call at JD’s AC and see how we can help!

AC Repair in Longview, Texas For Long Lasting Cooling

An air conditioning system is a huge investment. With proper maintenance and care, your AC system can last for many years. However, there may come a time when it needs to be repaired or completely replaced.

Some of the signs that you need to have your air conditioner serviced are: your unit is not cooling at all, the unit is not working as efficiently as it used to and you see water dripping on the floor. If you see water dripping on the floor from your air conditioner then this could mean a number of things such as there may be a problem with the condenser coil, an improper drainage system, or some other problem with the AC unit itself. If you see that there is a problem with the coil then you should hire a professional HVAC technician to repair it.

An improper drainage system can cause water to back up into the air conditioner and cause water damage to your home. The humidity in your home may also be causing mold growth in your AC unit. Mold will eventually clog the air conditioner and cause it to fail completely. Mold can also create unhealthy indoor air quality.

Benefits of having a professional repair your AC system

Why? There are many benefits of hiring a professional HVAC technician.

These include:

– Safe repairs and professional cleaning

– Fast, and reliable service

5 Trouble Shooting Tips Every East Texas Homeowner Should Know

5 Trouble Shooting Tips Every East Texas Homeowner Should Know

June 1, 2021

No matter where you live, there are always challenges with your home’s heating and cooling system. And in a humid climate such as East Texas, it can be especially stressful to know how to issues when they arise without professional help. But lucky for us here at JD’s, we are your local go-to heating and cooling experts, and we love to help those in our community!

We’ve put together five troubleshooting tips that our team here at JD’s AC wants every East Texas homeowner to know. Let’s get started!:

  • Replace your dirty air filters

The one issue we find most common within our East Texas community is dirty air filters. Therefore, our number one troubleshooting tip is, you guessed it! Replacing your dirty air filters. When your filters are dirty, they become ‘clogged’ causing dust, dirt, dander, and other contaminants to block the system from pushing out clean air. Not only this, but your AC system begins to work harder trying desperately to deliver clean air into your home. Along with this, the extra strain being put on your AC unit causes a surge in energy and an increase in the wear and tear of your HVAC system. Reducing the longevity of your system over time.

Simple fix? Replace your air filters every 90 days. Sooner if you have pets within the home, elderly and immunocompromised family, and those who suffer from asthma, or other respiratory issues.

  • Clean away debris from your outdoor AC unit

Since your outdoor unit is exposed to the elements of nature, this can pose a risk to your HVAC unit over time if not properly maintained. Grass, sticks, limbs, dirt, and other solid particles accumulate in your HVAC unit causing obstruction of airflow to your indoor living areas, directly affecting the air quality and cooling capabilities of your unit. As a homeowner in East Texas, it’s easy to keep your unit running effectively and efficiently.

Simply, open your air conditioner condenser unit, and clear away any debris that is keeping the HVAC unit from functioning at the optimal level. Removing any vegetation that is near the outdoor unit.

  • Clean your indoor air vents, ducts, and registers

When clean air is circulating through your home, it exits through your air vents. When you have not cleaned your indoor air filters, substances such as dirt, dust, and other foreign particles will stick to your vents, ducts, and registers. This directly affects and diminishes the quality of your indoor air.

Pro tip: It’s wise to seek professional HVAC technician’s services if you are unable to safely clean the vent systems in your East Texas home.

  • Check your thermostat

Many homeowners don’t think to check their thermostat for the fault when their system starts to give them issues. Firstly, you will want to check to make sure that your thermostat is getting adequate power. Reset your thermostat and temperatures, if you notice that there is no change, you may need to consult with one of our licensed HVAC technicians.

  • Check your circuit breaker and power supply

If your AC unit doesn’t start at all, go to the source of your electrical supply cords, and make sure that they are in the proper place. Additionally, you should check to see if your circuit breaker is on. Oftentimes, when there is an overload of power the circuit will shut off the power supply to the breaker. If you are not able to diagnose the problem by resetting the breaker, a technician will be able to assess the problem and provide a solution.

While troubleshooting tips can help you find existing problems with your HVAC unit, you can’t solve all of them yourself. For all your East Texas HVAC diagnosing, repair, and maintenance needs, call JD’s AC, your local heating and cooling experts! Our team of highly trained and licensed technicians will help fix any issues with your heating, cooling, and air conditioning systems.

Portable Air Conditioners: Pros and Cons

Portable Air Conditioners: Pros and Cons

June 1, 2021

While many East Texas homeowners dream of having an air conditioner that we can take anywhere with us, there are only a small number of customers that purchase a portable air conditioner. So many homeowners ask the question; What are the pros and cons of having a portable air conditioner? JD’s AC has gathered a list of the benefits of portable air conditioners versus the drawbacks of them.

Advantages of having a portable air conditioner

  • Portable air conditioners do not require professional installation

This means that you do not need to call an air conditioning service in East Texas to get your air conditioner working. Simply, unpack, and connect your portable air conditioner unit to your electrical switch, turn on, and enjoy! However, it is recommended to call your local East Texas air conditioning service for regular service or repair.

  • They can be moved throughout different rooms in your home

One of the largest benefits of having a portable air conditioner is that it can be easily moved from room to room. You can have it in your bedroom one evening, and easily shift it to the living room in the morning time. Again, you don’t have to call an air conditioning company in East Texas to help with this.

  • Portable air conditioners are decreasing in cost everyday

As technology advances, portable air conditioning systems are becoming increasingly more affordable. Many companies are releasing their newest models featuring a light, sleek design much smaller in size than the older versions of the portable air conditioners.

  • Portable air conditioners can be easily hidden

And last but not least, they can be hidden or put away for when you are no longer needing them. If you feel like the air conditioner is ruining the look over your interior design, you can simply place it somewhere that is not as visible.

Disadvantages of having a portable air conditioner

  • Potentially unwanted noise

Now it’s time to discuss the drawbacks of an indoor portable air conditioner. The first and most important drawback is that they do produce a significant amount of noise. Now for some East Texas homeowners, that isn’t an issue, in fact could be seen as an advantage to the system. However, for those who do not like the noise, portable air conditioners may not be right for you.

If you notice your unit making more noise than usual; it’s important to call your local East Texas air conditioning company immediately. One of our certified technicians will inspect your unit for any internal problems that may be causing the increase in noise.

  • Not very economically friendly

While convenient, they are not always the most affordable option. Because they do not have an outdoor unit, some warm air is released into your space, causing your portable air conditioner to slow down the cooling process.

  • You have to drain the tanks regularly

Most portable air conditioners have tanks that store water produced during the cooling process. These tanks will need to be drained regularly in order to avoid any water from overflowing, and leaking onto your flooring. Which proves to be quite an unnecessary house chore for someone that has a busy schedule!

  • They are not effective when trying to cool large rooms

This is probably the least attractive feature of portable air conditioners. If you do have a large room, your AC will not be able to cool it properly. If you find that your portable air conditioner isn’t able to cool your large rooms, then the help of a second unit may be the solution to your problem.

You can always get advice from the most professional and reliable service providers in East Texas. Our technicians will help you make the best decision for your home’s cooling needs. Give JD’s AC a call today! Your local East Texas cooling and heating company!
