Frequently Asked Questions for HVAC

JD’s AC is here to help Longview and its surrounding East Texas neighbors with all their frequently asked questions

What is a ‘SEER’ Rating?

The SEER Rating, or otherwise known as ‘Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio’ is what HVAC companies use to compare the energy efficiency of a multitude of central air conditioning and heat pump systems.

How is a ‘SEER’ Rating Calculated?

SEER Ratings are calculated by taking the total amount of cooling provided over a usual cooling season and then dividing that by the total electrical input during that same season. The final calculation represents the maximum efficiency rating for that particular cooling or heating system.

Why do I need regular HVAC maintenance?

Preventative HVAC maintenance is vital to the health and longevity of your entire system. Though you may not see it or hear it, your heating and cooling system works hard to keep you comfortable. And much like anything, regular usage will cause wear and tear to that product or item. With proper care and maintenance, your system will continue performing at an optimal level, and ward off most major malfunctions that are often overlooked. JD’s AC recommends that every 6 months you schedule a preventive maintenance inspection (tune-up) for your unit. During your regular HVAC maintenance service, our highly trained and certified technicians will uncover and fix leaks, rust, rotting, soot, unsafe wiring, corroded electrical contacts, changing of the filters, and general inspection of your unit’s overall health.

When should I replace my current AC unit?

Hearing things go bump in the night (or day)? It could be your current AC system! Ideally, the best time to replace your current AC unit is BEFORE it fails, leaving you rushed and very uncomfortable. Here are a few signs from JD’s that can help you determine if it’s time to replace your current HVAC system:

  • Increases in energy bills.
  • If your unit is more than 10 years old.
  • You notice that your unit is not keeping up with your needs.
  • If you have had to refill your refrigerant levels, multiple times.

In some cases, a simple repair may be all that you need to fix your unit. However, if your unit is no longer safe, or financially practical, call us here at JD’s AC and we will make recommendations to best suit your individual needs.

When should I replace my air filters?

The real question isn’t when should you, but how often! Several advantages come with replacing your air filters BEFORE they need replacing. JD’s AC wants to help keep you happy, healthy, and comfortable at home. So here is a list of common averages to help you gauge the need for a new air filter, and when.

  • If you live in a residential home, without pets it’s recommended that you change your air filter every 90 days.
  • If you live in a residential home, with one dog, cat, or small pet it is recommended that you change your air filter, every 60 days.
  • If you have more than one pet, 20-45 days is recommended.
  • For those who suffer from allergies, replace them every 20-45 days as you see the need.

And for those with vacation homes or only one occupant, no pets JD’s recommends a filter change every 6-12 months.

What is an indoor air quality test, and should I be concerned about it?

An indoor air quality test will help you determine how clean the air that you breathe, inside of your home really is! Did you know that the quality of your indoor air can be up to 100 times MORE polluted than the air outdoors? Scary to think about, right? It doesn’t have to be. By having a licensed HVAC technician come out and perform a thorough air quality test, you can get the answers (and solutions) you need.

Do your products come with a warranty?

In short, yes our products do come with a warranty certificate which is included in your homeowner information packet. Each warranty is specific to your model number, serial number, and installation dates of your products. Every piece of Carrier equipment that is installed in your home, is registered with Carrier Corporation to ensure that your 10-year parts warranty is honored. If you cannot locate your warranty certificate, JD’s AC will be happy to provide you with any information you need.

How do I select the right HVAC system for my home?

Many factors contribute to the individual needs of your home. Such as size, budget, temperature, and other factors such as pets, allergens, and additional product features. All of these factors are taken into consideration when our certified technicians visit your home! Be sure to talk with your HVAC technician and ask any frequently asked questions that you may have, as well as give them any information about your needs. Know what you plan to expect, and JD’s AC will deliver.
